Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH)

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) is one of four in the series: Cystic Lung Disease, which I have painted for the “Breathe” exhibition this year.

The four cystic lung diseases in this series are:

• Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM)

• Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH)

• Lymphocytic Interstitial Pneumonia (LIP)

• Birt Hogg Dube (BHD)

I was able to remember 3 of the 4 cystic lung diseases with the mnemonic:

“LIP, LAM and LCH”.

The only difficulty thereafter is remember what each acronym stands for…

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH)

• Radiology

  • Best seen on a CT (CAT )scan of the chest

  • Irregular shaped cysts (see dark round spots in the lungs bilaterally in the paining)

  • Irregular wall thickness, some thin, some thick.

  • Cavitary nodules

  • Spares the costophrenic angles

• Epidemiology

  • Males

  • Around 40 years old

  • 90% of people affected are smokers

  • Improves / resolves upon smoking cessation
